Upgrading and uninstalling

You upgrade and uninstall Virto Tab Navigation with the setup program (SetupSE.exe or Setup.exe). On large farms, you can use the SharePoint Management Shell instead: the Deploy.ps1 script from the package only installs the product, so you upgrade and remove it with the standard SharePoint cmdlets. Run the setup program and the shell under a farm administrator account.

Upgrading#

Download the new Virto.SharePoint.SE.Tabs.zip package and extract it with Extract All. Right-click SetupSE and select Run as administrator.

After the system checks, the wizard detects that another version of Virto Tab Navigation is installed and offers three operations:

• Upgrade: upgrades Virto Tab Navigation on all front-end web servers in the SharePoint SE farm.
• Remove: retracts the solution from all web applications and deletes it from the SharePoint solution store.
• Reinstall: removes the current version, then installs the new one.

Select Upgrade and click Next.

Wait until the wizard shows “All operations successfully completed”, then click Close.

Upgrading with PowerShell#

Don’t run Deploy.ps1 to upgrade: when the solution is already in the farm, the script doesn’t replace it with the new one. Instead, open the SharePoint Management Shell as administrator and update the solution from the new package:

The upgrade runs as a timer job. Wait until (Get-SPSolution Virto.SharePoint.Tabs.wsp).JobExists returns False.

To upgrade the modern web part, open Apps for SharePoint in your App Catalog, upload virto-tabs-navigation.sppkg from the new package to replace the current one, and deploy it.

Uninstalling#

Modern web part#

On each site where Virto Tab Navigation is added, go to Settings > Site contents, click … next to Virto Tabs Navigation, and select Remove.

Removing the package#

Right-click SetupSE in the package of the installed version and select Run as administrator. After the system checks, the wizard detects that Virto Tab Navigation is already installed and offers two operations:

• Repair: retracts the solution from all web applications and deploys it once again.
• Remove: retracts the solution from all web applications and deletes it from the SharePoint solution store.

Select Remove and click Next.

Wait until the wizard shows “All operations successfully completed”, then click Close.

Removing the package with PowerShell#

Deploy.ps1 can’t remove the product. Open the SharePoint Management Shell as administrator and run the following commands. They deactivate the Virto Tabs Navigation feature in every site collection where it’s active, retract the solution from all web applications, and delete it from the solution store:

Removing the modern package from the App Catalog#

The setup program and Deploy.ps1 only add virto-tabs-navigation.sppkg to the App Catalog and don’t remove it. After you remove the product, open Apps for SharePoint in your App Catalog and delete Virto Tabs Navigation.
