Installing Virto Tab Navigation

Virto Tab Navigation comes as two web parts in one package:

You can install them in two ways:

• Setup program (SetupSE.exe or Setup.exe): a wizard that suits most farms.
• PowerShell script (Deploy.ps1): for large farms, where you script the deployment.

Before you begin#

• Make sure you have access to the SharePoint server and that your account has farm administrator privileges.
• For the modern web part, create an App Catalog in your SharePoint if you don’t have one yet.
• Download the Virto.SharePoint.SE.Tabs.zip package and extract it with Extract All.

The extracted Virto.SharePoint.Tabs.Setup folder contains the setup program, the Deploy.ps1 script, and both web part packages.

Installing with the setup program#

The package contains two setup programs that install the same product. We recommend SetupSE: it’s the new setup program for SharePoint SE, signed with the VirtoSoftware certificate included in the package (Virto-Installer-CodeSigning.cer). The older Setup program works too.

Right-click SetupSE in the extracted package and select Run as administrator. The Virto Tabs Navigation for SharePoint SE setup wizard opens. Click Next.

The wizard checks whether Virto Tab Navigation can be installed from this machine: the .NET Framework and SharePoint versions, your permissions to install and deploy SharePoint solutions, the SharePoint Administration and Timer services, the solution file, and whether the product is already installed. When all the checks succeed, click Next.

Review the End User License Agreement — On-Premises (SharePoint Server), select I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and click Next.

Select the web applications and site collections where you want to install Virto Tab Navigation, and click Next to start the installation.

Wait until the wizard shows “All operations successfully completed”, then click Close.

Installing with PowerShell#

On large farms, you can install Virto Tab Navigation with the Deploy.ps1 script from the package instead of the setup program. The script defines the Install-WebPart function. It installs one web application per call, so call it once for each web application.

Open the SharePoint Management Shell as administrator under a farm administrator account, go to the extracted Virto.SharePoint.Tabs.Setup folder, load the script, and call the function:

The function:

1. Adds Virto.SharePoint.Tabs.wsp to the farm solution store, unless it’s already there.
2. Deploys the solution to the web application and waits for the deployment to finish.
3. Activates the Virto Tabs Navigation feature in every site collection of the web application.
4. If you pass sppkgPath and appCatalogURL, uploads virto-tabs-navigation.sppkg to Apps for SharePoint in the App Catalog.

Leave out sppkgPath and appCatalogURL to install only the classic web part. The modern package goes to the App Catalog once, so for the other web applications, call the function without them.

After the script uploads the modern package, open Apps for SharePoint in your App Catalog, select Virto Tabs Navigation, and deploy it.

After the installation#

Classic web part#

The classic web part is activated at the site collection level. In each site collection where you want to use Virto Tab Navigation, open Settings > Site settings and, under Site Collection Administration, click Site collection features. Check that Virto Tabs Navigation is active; if it isn’t, click Activate.

Modern web part#

The modern web part is added at the site level. The setup program adds virto-tabs-navigation.sppkg to Apps for SharePoint in your App Catalog: check that the list has the Virto Tabs Navigation app with the version you installed. Then, on each site where you want to use Virto Tab Navigation, click Settings > Add an app and add Virto Tabs Navigation.

Now you can add Virto Tab Navigation to a page.
