You set up all the tabs of a Virto Tab Navigation web part in the **Tabs Settings** panel. The panel works the same way on classic and modern pages; only the way you open it differs.

## Opening Tabs Settings

### Modern page

Open the page and click **Edit**. Select the Virto Tab Navigation web part and click the **Edit web part** (pencil) icon on its toolbar. In the **Virto Tab Navigation** pane, click **Configure WebPart**.

### Classic page

Open the page and click **Edit**. Open the web part menu (the arrow in the upper-right corner of the web part) and select **Edit Web Part**.

In the tool pane, expand **Tabs web part settings** and click **Configure WebPart**.

## The Tabs Settings panel

The panel shows the web part version and the **List of created tabs**. The web part always has at least one tab: when you add Virto Tab Navigation to a page, it creates a tab named **Default tab**.

Each tab in the list has an **Edit** (pencil) icon and a **Delete** (trash) icon. The handle on the left of a tab lets you drag it to another position.

## Creating a tab

Click **Create new tab**. The panel shows the fields of the new tab.

Fill in the fields:

- **Group web parts from**: where to pick the web parts from. See [Choosing where web parts come from](#choosing-where-web-parts-come-from).
- **Tab name**: the name visitors see on the tab. The name can be anything, for example "File operations" or "AD users". Long names are shortened to fit the tab. This field is required: while it's empty, it shows "Required field" and **Save tab** is unavailable.
- **Selected web parts**: one or more web parts to show on this tab. Each selected web part appears as a chip; to remove it from the tab, click **×** on the chip.

![Tab name field highlighted in red with the Required field message](https://img-docs.virtosoftware.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/configuring_tabs_6-689x355.png)

Click **Save tab**, and then click **Save** at the bottom of the panel. See [Saving changes](#saving-changes).

You can create as many tabs as you need.

### Choosing where web parts come from

The **Group web parts from** setting controls which web parts **Selected web parts** offers:

- **Current web part zone**: only the web parts in the same web part zone as Virto Tab Navigation.
- **From whole page**: all web parts on the page.

### Choosing web parts

**Selected web parts** lists web parts by their titles. On classic pages, list views appear as "List:" followed by the list name.

A Virto Tab Navigation web part can't be placed on a tab: it's shown in the list but can't be selected. This means one tab can't be nested in another.

## Editing a tab

Click the **Edit** (pencil) icon next to the tab. The panel shows "Currently editing:" with the tab name, and the same fields as for a new tab. Change the name, the source of web parts, or the web parts themselves, then click **Update tab** and **Save**.

## Changing the tab order

In **List of created tabs**, drag a tab by the handle on its left to a new position, then click **Save**. The tabs appear on the page in the same order.

## Deleting a tab

Click the **Delete** (trash) icon next to the tab, then click **Save**.

You can't delete a tab when it's the only one: the icon is unavailable, because Virto Tab Navigation always keeps at least one tab.

## Saving changes

Tab changes are saved in two steps:

1. **Save tab** (for a new tab) or **Update tab** (for an existing tab) keeps the changes of that tab in the panel. **Cancel** next to it discards them.
2. **Save** at the bottom of the panel writes all tab changes to the page. Until you click it, the page doesn't change, as the note at the bottom of the panel reminds you: "Tab changes are written to the page only after Save".

While a tab form is open, **Save** at the bottom is unavailable: finish the tab with **Save tab**, **Update tab**, or **Cancel** first. **Cancel** at the bottom closes the panel without writing the changes to the page.

After that, publish the modern page or save the classic page, so visitors see the new tabs.

## How tabs look on the page

Tabs appear when the page is not in edit mode. Visitors see one tab at a time: the web parts on other tabs stay hidden until the visitor opens their tab.

On this modern page, **Tab one** holds Virto Multiple File Operations, **Tab two** holds the Virto User Manager user copy form, and **Button** holds a button.

On this classic page, **Support tickets** and **Alerts** each hold one list.

## Access to tabs

Virto Tab Navigation has no permission settings of its own. Access is controlled by SharePoint: users see the page and the web parts on its tabs according to their SharePoint permissions.

## Appearance

Tabs use the built-in design. Virto Tab Navigation has no settings for custom styling.
