Virto Charts App capabilities and limits

Virto Charts App builds a dashboard of charts from one SharePoint Online list and shows it as a tab in Microsoft Teams. It reads the list and writes nothing back to SharePoint. The app is made by VirtoSoftware, which has built apps for SharePoint and Microsoft 365 since 2011; on the VirtoSoftware website it is listed as Virto Charts & Data Visualization App.

Where it runs

  • Microsoft Teams: a tab in team channels, group chats and meeting chats, in light and dark themes. The interface is in English.
  • The app is not in the Teams app store. You download its package from the VirtoSoftware website and add it as a custom app; where custom apps are blocked, a Teams administrator uploads it to the organization’s catalog.

Data source and charts

  • One SharePoint Online list per dashboard; a site can have as many dashboards as needed. The list picker shows the lists the user can view.
  • Your browser reads the list items straight from SharePoint, so list content does not pass through VirtoSoftware’s server.
  • Five chart types:
    • Status: items by status.
    • Members: items by a chosen field, grouped by Assigned To, Created By or Modified By.
    • Completion: the share of items completed in time and overdue, based on a due-date field.
    • Burndown: new, open and closed items by day.
    • Lead time: the time from when an item was created to when it was completed.
  • Filters by date range, field and value; header and series colours; print, or download as PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF; CSV export for Completion and Lead time.

What Virto Charts App does not do

  • Only SharePoint lists. No Excel files, databases, Power BI datasets or Planner plans, and one chart never combines several lists.
  • No custom chart builder. The five chart types are the only ones.
  • No editing of list data, and no scheduled or emailed reports.
  • No live refresh. A dashboard reads the list when it opens.
  • The Completion chart leaves out items without a due date.
  • Permission to add custom apps in Teams, or a Teams administrator who uploads the package.
  • The app signs in through its own Microsoft Entra app, Virto Charts (client ID ade07097-b157-4ba4-926d-ab3ac3196a89), with delegated read access to SharePoint (Sites.Read.All) and no application permissions.
  • People can approve this themselves, unless the organization requires an administrator to approve apps.

Where your data stays

  • List items stay in SharePoint.
  • VirtoSoftware stores the dashboard settings on Microsoft Azure in the United States: the dashboard name, its site and list, the chosen fields and colours, and the author.
