Known issues: Microsoft changes that affect Virto apps
When Microsoft changes SharePoint Online, Exchange Online or Microsoft Teams, a Virto app can behave differently even though the app itself has not changed. This page lists those changes: what you may see, where things stand, and what to do. The newest entry is at the top.
If you see something similar that is not listed here, write to support@virtosoftware.com and tell us:
- the app, and the screen or action where it happens;
- since when, and whether it happens every time or only now and then;
- whether other users, sites or lists see the same;
- the error text, and if you can, the errors in the browser console (F12 > Console).
Microsoft 365 administrators can also check Health > Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center, where Microsoft posts its own incidents.
SharePoint Online update of 12 October 2026
Status: resolved by Microsoft on 14–15 October 2026. No action is needed.
Around 12 October 2026 Microsoft rolled out a change to SharePoint Online that broke add-ons from many vendors in some tenants. Microsoft confirmed four bugs with one root cause and rolled the change back. According to Microsoft, the change was groundwork for future security adjustments, and its testing missed common customer scenarios (sp-dev-docs #11055, #11056, #11057, #11059).
Virto apps use some of the SharePoint features that were affected, so between 12 and 15 October the following could happen. We received no customer reports of it:
- Virto Charts App in Microsoft Teams: a blank tab, as with every SharePoint Framework app in Teams at the time.
- Virto Kanban Board App: creating a new board could fail, including a board from a template and the demo board on first open. Existing boards opened and worked as usual.
- Virto Multiple Operations: in Bulk Delete, deleting with Whole list or Whole library could stop with an error. Nothing was deleted in that case.
These symptoms stopped when Microsoft rolled the change back. If you still see any of them, the cause is something else: write to support.
Microsoft has said it will continue the security work after better testing. If that brings back the same problems, we will update this entry.
Exchange Web Services turned off in Exchange Online
Status: in progress at Microsoft, October 2026 to April 2027. Affects Virto Calendar App.
Microsoft is retiring Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online. It turns EWS off organization by organization from October 2026 and completely in April 2027 (Deprecation of Exchange Web Services in Exchange Online).
Virto Calendar App gets most of its data through Microsoft Graph, which keeps working. Once EWS is off in your organization:
- public folder calendars are no longer shown, and a message above the calendar says that EWS is turned off;
- category colours and settings of Microsoft 365 group calendars stop working, without a message;
- rooms and resources that Microsoft Graph does not find are no longer shown.
What to do: keep the EWS.AccessAsUser.All permission granted while EWS is still on, and check whether it is on with Get-OrganizationConfig | Format-List EwsEnabled. Details: Does Virto Calendar App still work when Microsoft turns off EWS?
Office 365 connectors retired in Microsoft Teams
Status: completed by Microsoft on 22 May 2026. Affects Virto Alerts & Reminder App rules that post to Teams.
Microsoft switched off Office 365 connectors in Teams, including Incoming Webhook, between 18 and 22 May 2026 (Retirement of Office 365 connectors within Microsoft Teams). An alert that still holds an Incoming Webhook URL no longer posts to its channel.
What to do: create a workflow for the same channel in the Teams Workflows app and paste its URL into MS Teams Workflow URL in the alert’s recipients. Step by step: How to send alerts from SharePoint to Microsoft Teams.
SharePoint add-ins retired
Status: completed by Microsoft on 2 April 2026. Affects the old Virto Calendar add-in.
Since 2 April 2026 SharePoint add-ins no longer work in any SharePoint Online tenant (Microsoft’s announcement). Where the old Virto Calendar app part was, users now see an error or an empty box.
Virto Calendar App itself is a SharePoint Framework (SPFx) solution and is not affected, and your calendars carry over. What to do: The old Virto Calendar add-in stopped working: how to switch to the Virto Calendar web part.
